Support Vowed for Protection, Conservation of Agusan Marsh

PATIN-AY, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), provincial government of Agusan del Sur, and Philsaga Mining Corp. have committed themselves to help preserve and protect the sprawling Agusan Marsh in this province in Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga Region).

Agusan del Sur Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Sixto C. Badua said the officials of the six towns, village chiefs, and rural folk also pledged their all-out support for the conservation and protection of the areas around the 40,854-hectare Agusan Marsh.

"They committed to help in the efforts to protect our migratory birds," said PENR Officer Badua.

The towns composing the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary are La Paz, Rosario, Bunawan, Talacogon, Loreto, and San Francisco.

Badua said Agusan del Sur Rep. Rodolfo "Ompong" Plaza, his younger sister Gov. Ma. Valentina Plaza, and Philsaga Mining Corp. president Army Col. (ret.) Samuel G. Afdal have already extended assistance in the preservation and protection of Agusan Marsh, which is one of the 10 areas identified by the participants in the recent BIMP-EAGA meeting in Cagayan de Oro City as tourist destination.

Philsaga and DENR have deployed more river craft in an effort to monitor illegal activities within the Agusan Marsh.

During a recent meeting held here and attended by all concerned government agencies and non-government organizations led by DENR Regional Technical Director Mario Eludo, at least 21 resolutions calling for the development, conservation, and protection of Agusan Marsh. …
