No Call Center Layoffs

A major business process outsourcing (BPO) company will keep more than 800 call center agents in its payroll and would actually hire more personnel despite the global economic slowdown, President Arroyo announced yesterday.

The President belied reports that Advanced Contact Solutions Inc. (ACS) has discharged 889 workers after it allegedly lost a big US-based client that went bankrupt, saying the information and communications technology (ICT) sector remains a "robust" job generating industry in the country.

Mrs. Arroyo said she was "very alarmed" when she heard about the reported massive layoff in ACS and immediately had the matter verified.

"We checked with that center, ACS, and they totally denied it. In fact they are looking for more workers," she said during the launch of the University of the Philippines -- Ayala Land Techno Hub in Quezon City.

"They were even telling us the story that other call centers like Teletech and others read the news, they called up ACS and said, 'Where are the workers you are laying off? We want to absorb them right away,' but ACS says 'We're not laying off anyone, we're looking for more'," she said.

The President said the ICT sector remains one of the bright sectors that keep the local economic engine running despite the troubled financial system of the world economy. …
