DENR Introduces Integrated Management Plan on Leyte's Watershed Development

TACLOBAN CITY -- In as much as numerous sectors derive benefit from the Salug River, an Integrated Watershed Management Plan (IWMP) is needed before any future development activities can be implemented within the 20,000 hectares Salug Watershed.

"Even the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), albeit the area is in its domain, cannot just go in there and implement whatever projects it sees fit to implement. We have to consult other stakeholders."

Felipe S. Calub, regional technical director for Forestry Management Service (FMS) of the DENR in Region 8, bared yesterday.

He said that this is the reason for the Orientation and 1st Consultative Meeting they conducted on the preparation of the IWMP, which was held in Hilongos, Leyte last Nov. 11, 2008.

As he said that many more similar meetings are needed until such IWMP can be fully hatched, finalized and enforced.

It was gathered that this first consultative meeting was attended by representatives of the three concerned municipal local government units (LGUs), the National Irrigation Authority (NIA), people's organizations, and concerned personnel of the DENR, spearheaded by the FMS, in close coordination with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer in Leyte, and the City Environment and Natural Resources Officer in Baybay City. …
