Accidents in the Workplace

MILLIONS of accidents in the workplace and cases of ill health caused by work occur in the UK every year.

Many of the victims work in hazardous industries such as construction, fishing, transport and agriculture.

But accidents at work can happen to anyone. The most serious, and sometimes fatal, accidents usually happen as a result of falls from a height, or being struck by a vehicle or other moving object.

Yet around one in four major incidents also occur after a simple slip or trip. Disorders such as back pain and repetitive strain injuries are also common along with skin conditions and burns.

Stress-related conditions account for a significant proportion of occupational ill-health cases. Large numbers of workers are also at risk from noise levels which could damage their hearing.

Yet, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) most of these cases could be avoided if employers put proper safety control measures in place.

Everyone has a legal right to be protected from these workrelated risks, as far as is reasonably practicable, under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. …
