It is estimated that there are 700,000 people who have dementia in the United Kingdom and that this will increase to over a million by 2025. Occupational therapists work with people who have dementia in a variety of settings. One key aspect of the occupational therapy role is to analyse and adapt the environments of people who have dementia. Occupational therapists aim to enable the person's occupational performance by removing, or compensating for, aspects of their environment. Environmental analysis and adaptation have been identified as an occupational therapy core skill.

The aim of this research study was to explore and develop understanding about occupational therapists' use of environmental analysis and adaptation with people who have dementia, living in community settings. The research was undertaken within NHS specialist mental health services. Qualitative methodology was the basis of the research. …
