Governors Need More Training and Better Communication, Says Report; New Members May Get Compulsory Induction Sessions to Boost Their Skills

BETTER training and communication is needed to improve the standards of school governors, according to a Welsh Assembly Government report.

The report by the Assembly's Enterprise and Learning Committee identified "a range of concerns" about the quality of some of Wales' 23,000 governors and sets out a number of recommendations.

Communication with governS ors was needed to ensure they were all fully aware of their roles and responsibilities, it said.

It suggested that the Assembly Government should consider linking up with new partners to create a training scheme for governors.

Plaid Cymru AM Gareth Jones, who chairs the committee, said: "This report identifies that in the vast majority of cases, school governors are fulfilling their duties effectively. The challenge now is to address the minority of schools that aren't.

"The real test of the effectiveness of school governors will be a nationwide and long-term improvement in the performance of pupils, and we recommend that the Welsh Government should scrutinise that relationship to ensure a strong correlation between good governance and educational attainment."

The committee heard evidence from Governors Wales, which acts as an advocate for governors in Wales. Its chairman, Carol Sayce, said she welcomed the report.

"We feel it's starting to acknowledge the factors we highlighted in our evidence to the committee and which we are mindful of in the work we do," she said.

Governors Wales director Jane Morris added: "The report picks up on making induction training mandatory for school governors, which we firmly believe in.
