SM Eyes Carbon Credit for Energy Program

A P300-million energy efficiency program is bringing significant carbon emission reduction (CER) and economic benefits to Philippines' biggest retailer SM Supermalls. Since it embarked on environment projects in early 2000, SM Supermall began reaping the benefits in implementing its solid waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency, and air quality efficiency. Specifically, from its energy efficiency program, SM Supermalls is anticipating to earn carbon emission reduction (CER) or carbon credits with its 50 million kilowatthour (kwh) electricity savings per year. The energy savings rose to 67 million kwh as of last year. The benefits come from SM Supermalls' advanced initiative to implement environment conservation programs even before government implements laws. "Even when there was no implementing rules and regulations (IRR) yet issued by the government, we already implemented our environment programs," SM Supermalls President Annie S.
