HOSPITAL KEPT BABY ORGANS WITHOUT CONSENT; 100 Families Not Informed

MORE than 100 families yesterday found out a top maternity hospital took their babies' organs without permission.

The relatives only received a letter from the Health Service Executive yesterday - even though health chiefs knew for more than 18 months.

The news came as the Carter Report was released showing there is still a problem with Dublin's Rotunda Hospital retaining organs without consent.

Master of the hospital Dr Sam CoulterSmith said: "We received a copy of the Carter Report from the HSE in April 2009.

"There are now 138 postmortems carried out between 2000 and 2007 that are affected. We are confident that we can provide an open and full response to all the parents in these 138 cases."

In preparing his report Mr Carter reviewed every postmortem in the Rotunda from 2000 to the end of 2007.

The report discovered variations were found between the terms of consent given by families and the examinations by the Rotunda Hospital.

It also showed there were serious delays in following families' instructions for the respectful burial of organs. …
