Protection of Agusan Marsh Strengthened

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), in close partnership with the local government of Agusan del Sur and the Department of Tourism (DoT), has strengthened protection and integrated effective management of the 40,854-hectare Agusan Marsh in Agusan del Sur.The concerned government agencies in close coordination with multi-sectoral groups and travel agencies also mobilized their respective committees to preserve the tourism potentials of the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary Eco-Tourism.The DENR, provincial government of Agusan del Sur and the DoT underscored the need for sustained integrative management approaches for effective preservation of one of Asia’s greatest marsh.As this developed, a P4.5 million fund is already set aside for the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary Eco-Tourism.Where the funding of P2.5 million came from the DoT, while the P2 million was also funded by the provincial government as funding support for the tourism program of Agusan Marsh which is located in the six municipalities of the province.Agusan Marsh is one of the ecologically significant wetland ecosystems in the country today.The area harbors unique and pristine habitats like the “sago” and “peat swamp forest.”It also provides habitat to the rare and endangered soft-shelled fresh water turtle, fresh water crocodile, oriental darter, purple heron and other rare species. …
