IT'S LIKELY THAT publishers are looking to move forward from a year defined by staff cuts and down numbers. But despite tough times, this year introduced a number of graphically and conceptually notable magazine covers. The execution of this story is amazing! Drew Barrymore (shot by Alexei Hay) looks fabulous underwater--everything seemed to come together perfectly despite the obvious logistical challenges. The concept worked equally well in the inside story. It's a project like this that any creative director would want to be a part of at some point in their career.

I do love a sense of humor with magazine cover design and immediately thought of The Advocate's May 2009 issue, which examined how the recession was hurting the porn industry. The only trouble was that most blow-up dolls with mouths agape are female--and the story focused primarily on gay porn. This doll is playful without being overtly sexual. …
