Ecology, Biodiversity Join 'Flores De Mayo' Celebration

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has given an environmental slant on the colonial tradition of Flores de Mayo.Since 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), DENR, through the Protected Areas Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) and in partnership with the Haribon Foundation, Ms. Earth Foundation, the local government of Quezon City, the Philippine Orchid Society, Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands, Inc, the Philippine Foundation for the Environment, and the Philippine Native Plants Conservation Society, Inc., held Friday its "Flores de Mayo para sa Samu't Saring Buhay" (Flores de Mayo for Biodiversity.)Featuring Ms. Earth Philippines beauties as sagalas, the Flores de Mayo also showcased native plant species at the SM North EDSA. The sagalas wore nature-inspired gowns and umbrellas.The procession started at 3 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center (NAPWNC) in Diliman, Quezon City and proceeded to the SM North EDSA Annex where a short program-cum-mini fashion show was held. A photo exhibit on the International Day for Biodiversity was also mounted at the Silver C Lobby at the same venue. …
