Moviegoer: Gretchen's Teasing, Magkaribal's Return

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE: Reporters who covered the media launch of "Magkaribal," ABS-CBN's new teleserye, couldn't understand what to make of a network policy to confine their questions to the program and nothing else and nothing but during the obligatory public interview portion.

It seemed very odd yet so tempting. Right in front of them were two of the newsiest personalities in the business today, Gretchen Barretto and Bea Alonzo, but they couldn't ask them any question that didn't concern fashion, or food, or whatnot, or their roles in what is possibly the first locally made drama series tackling the world of fashion in the Philippines.

Obviously, the network is trying to avoid any more controversy between Barretto and Angelica Panganiban over "Magkaribal" leading man, Derek Ramsay. Earlier, Barretto aired she had been warned by ABS-CBN to hush up on the Angelica-Derek issue. After the presscon, however, Gretchen cleared she was merely joking when she openly flirted with Ramsay in a previous interview.

Alonzo herself has some issues to clear. Has she really grown colder to former best friend, Shaina Magdayao, allegedly because the latter has won the heart of John Lloyd Cruz?* * *

MISSING GRETCHEN'S QUOTES: Gretchen Barretto, looking digitally picture-perfect that night, must have felt so disappointed not having been allowed space to let out her quotable quotes, standard fare in every Gretchen encounter. Let's face it, Gretchen's statements, love them or hate them, eyebrow-raising but always intriguing, liven up the entertainment industry.

"Magkaribal" is the story of (once more), separated sisters who reunite in their adult years as rivals over a man and a common career. Its director, Nuel Naval, says the teleserye combines two disciplines in RP fashion: Divisoria and the high-end fashion houses in Manila, notably Malate and Ermita. …
