Early Learning Center delayed:

The opening of Barrington Unit District 220's new Early Learning Center likely will be further delayed until mid-October because flooring installation has been hindered by high moisture levels in the concrete foundation. This reportedly is to be expected after such an unusually warm and humid summer. Construction of the center previously was halted due to a monthlong regional construction strike in July. The new building next to Barrington Middle School -- Prairie Campus had been due to open on Sept. 28.

Dist. 15 teacher named finalist:

The Illinois State Board of Education announced Friday that a teacher at Plum Grove Junior High in Palatine Township Elementary District 15 is one of eight finalists for 2010-11 Illinois Teacher of the Year. Trish Vanderploeg, an eighth-grade English teacher, was picked from a field of 160 nominations through ISBE's Those Who Excel educator recognition program. The winner will be announced next month.

Inverness Oktoberfest:

The annual Inverness Oktoberfest will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, on the grounds of the Valley Swim Club, 324 Windsor St. The event will include a bonfire, food, music, raffle and activities for all ages. The cost is $7 for children and $12 for adults before Sept. 22. The price goes up $3 per ticket after that. For information, visit
