IT was a trend set by the likes of Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Britney Spears.

So it was only a matter of time before British celebrities jumped on the male nanny bandwagon.

Actress Keeley Hawes has revealed that she hired a man to look after her three children - insisting he was the best candidate for the job.

Miss Hawes, 34, said that after seeing scores of female candidates, it was Adam Soane that won her over.

'We call him our "manny". I interviewed lots of nice ladies for the job but Adam was The One. We all love him,' she said.

Close observers might note that the winning candidate bears a resemblance to Miss Hawes's husband, actor Matthew Macfadyen.

The Ashes to Ashes star admitted that her husband was not keen to have a man look after the children at first but is now a big fan.

She told Surrey Life: 'Adam is brilliant. All the nannies I interviewed for the position came with huge books full of glittery pictures that children had made them, which I thought was a bit creepy.

'He came with a book full of police checks. I like that. From that moment, I couldn't imagine my kids being in the hands of anyone else. …
