DESIGNERS from across Wales gathered last night to celebrate the launch of the sixth Cardiff Design Festival.

The festival, which runs throughout the month, will showcase Welsh talent and get the public involved with workshops, markets and live music nights.

Last night, festival organisers at the Cardiff Bay launch promised this year's event would be the "biggest and the best" - with empty shops in the Royal and Morgan arcades in the city centre given over for exhibition space to showcase everything from graphics, furniture and product design to multimedia and interactive design.

Olwen Moseley, director of the 2010 Cardiff Design Festival, which is organised by the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (Uwic) said: "This year's festival offers a packed programme of events that seek to celebrate the very best of design in Wales.

"Every year, the festival grows to get bigger and better.

We really have some of the best design in the world coming from Wales and it's about time we shouted about it.

"As a relatively small nation, we really do punch above our weight."

She added: "Our festival is being pitted alongside those in Milan and Istanbul, which shows the level of talent we have here in Wales.

"Importantly, the Cardiff Design Festival is building a reputation for showcasing talent that is current - not retrospective.

"And this year is certainly no different with some very fresh and innovative new designers having their work shortlisted as part of the Cardiff Design Festival Showcase."

The festival includes the Best in Welsh Design Awards, the 50 finalists for which were on display at last night's event.

They include designs for sheepskin baby boots, buildings including the controversial WJEC headquarters on Western Avenue, and packaging designs for everything from yoghurt and sausages to Mr Creamy ice cream. …
