UN Relief Group Urged to Coordinate Operations

MANILA, Philippines - A local police commander urged Sunday the leadership of the United Nations World Food Program (UN-WFP) to coordinate with the Philippine government security forces in its relief operations in Lanao del Sur.This, after a helper of a truck it rented for the distribution of food items for displaced persons in the province was killed after they were fired upon in Marantao town on Friday afternoon.Senior Supt. Cosanie Derogongan, director of the Lanao del Sur Police, identified the victim as 25-year-old Sadam Basnillo after he was hit in the body by a bullet fired by a group of armed men in Barangay Tuca Ilian, Maul, Marantao town.Derogongan said the victim was on board a truck driven by his father and on their way home after unloading relief items in several towns in Lanao del Sur when a group of armed men led by a certain "Pakpak" started shooting the vehicle, hitting the victim in the body.But the official clarified that Basnillo was not connected with the UN-WFP, saying he was a helper of a truck being tapped by the agency to distribute relief goods for the persons displaced due to the conflict in Lanao del Sur and nearby areas. …
