November Is Clean Air Month

MANILA, Philippines - Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1101 issued in 1997, the month of November is observed as Clean Air Month, with activities focused on issues and concerns related to the problems of air pollution throughout the country. Leading the activities is the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-EMB).This year's celebration coincides with the 11th Anniversary of the implementation of the landmark legislation Republic Act No. 8749, the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999. Since the law was passed, the DENR-EMB, in partnership with various sectors of society, has embarked on various programs intended to achieve better air quality. The Linis Hangin Program, which was launched in November 2004 has three sub-programs: Bantay Tambutso, Bantay Tsiminea, and Bantay Sunog-Basura. The Bantay Tambutso sa Malls was launched in 2004 and the Bantay Tambutso sa Eskwela in 2005.In 2007, the Department of Interior and Local Government, with support from the DENR-EMB, mandated the launching of Linis Hangin sa Siyudad/Munisipyo Program as part of the nationwide enforcement and implementation of Republic Act No. 8749. The program calls on local chief executives to include clean air policies in their local development plans; conduct information campaigns on the health value of smoke-free communities; and encourage community leaders, civil and religious organizations, and schools to actively support the campaign against air pollution in their respective areas and communities. …
