BAGUIO CITY, Philippines - Approximately P300 million is required by the Baguio Water District (BWD) to complete the rehabilitation and upgrading of the city's 35-year old water distribution system that will significantly enhance the provision of water to its over 33,000 consumers.Engr. Salvador Royeca, BWD assistant general manager, said the amount will be utilized to improve the water distribution system in the Pacdal and Aurora Hill areas which stands to benefit 45 percent of the total number of consumers being supplied by the water district.Earlier, the P700 million water re-piping project of the water district which was funded by a loan from the Australian government was already terminated and it was only able to improve the distribution system in areas 1 and 2 considering that the Asian financial crisis resulted in the insufficiency of the fund to complete the citywide re-piping project. However, Royeca revealed the BWD is now completing the works for the remaining finishing touches for areas 1 and 2 with the R20 million counterparts from the water district in order to fully operationalize a bigger part of the improved system for better efficiency in delivering water to the households and commercial clients.According to Royeca, the completion of the rehabilitation of the city's water distribution system will significantly reduce its 40 percent system loss which is eating up a huge portion of the district's operating cost.BWD is able to produce at least 50,000 cubic meters of potable water daily from its various pumping stations around the city but the same is not enough to cater to the more or less 60,000 cubic meters daily demand of local residents and tourists due to the high systems loss. …
