Can This Help You Find Work? You Bet, and Libraries Are Offering to Teach You How to Find a Job by Using Technology

Michael Yublosky of Buffalo Grove is hoping to open your eyes to social media and how it can help you find a job.

In fact, the principal behind GEM Consulting aims to help you for free at programs he's doing called "Using LinkedIn, Google and Twitter for a job Search" at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 11, at the Indian Trails Public Library, 355 S. Schoenbeck Road, Wheeling. More programs are set for July 18, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8 at the same library.

"I want to open their eyes to a whole lot of jobs that can be found via the web even before they're general public knowledge," Yublosky said.

Being on such professional sites opens your network of contacts and, therefore, your access to information, he said.

His program, which offers hands-on experience, provides tools needed to create and to promote a website that can display a resume or a portfolio, he said.

He recently did a similar program in Libertyville, teaches at the Career Resource Center in Lake Forest and will be presenting at the Buffalo Grove Park District this fall, he said.

"Because of the speed of social media, jobs are broadcast over these sites and many people aren't aware of it, if they're not part of social media," Yublosky said.

And he's not the only one providing programs for free with the hope of helping you in your job search or to promote your business.

Richard Kong, information services manager, and librarian Shannon Scanlan, of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, said its Business Center is offering the Job Seeker Program Series, co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Arlington Heights, along with a new presentation called "Business Bytes."

This center provides monthly programs focusing on technology that can be useful to local business owners and employees. Recent topics include Google Places, Facebook, Twitter and video marketing on YouTube, said Kong.
