PCG Cites Safety, Security Measures

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has submitted three major accomplishments in the field of marine environmental protection, maritime safety and maritime security.On marine environmental protection, the PCG succesfully hosted this year's marine pollution exercise entitled MARPOLEX Manila 2011 last May 4-7 in Manila Bay, Philippines. "The conduct of this biennial exercise is a commitment of the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan in the implementation of the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) Oil Spill Response Action Plan (OSRAP) and the Sulawesi Sea Oil Spill Network Response Plan (SSOSNRP), said PCG commandant Ramon Castaneda Liwag' stressing that, "both action plans are regional cooperation mechanisms that promote marine environmental protection against oil pollution."Local stakeholders and representatives from Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Japan participated as observers in the MARPOL EX Manila 2011. The significant number of oil spill incidents in the previous years resulted to the establishment of this regional cooperation mechanism with the purpose of ensuring the capability and readiness of member countries in addressing pollution from oil spill.
