University Students' Union to Jointly Run Lettings Company

A UNIVERSITY students' union is to jointly run a new Liverpool lettings agency in what has been billed as a unique venture to transform student accommodation.

In a move dubbed "the first of its kind in the UK" Liverpool John Moores University's student union has set up a 50: 50 joint venture with established Liverpool estate agents City Residential.

The company, which will be overseen by two directors from each organisation alongside an independent director, is called Student Union Lettings Ltd.

Confirming the venture, both sides said the move would ensure students get access to affordable and high quality accommodation in a market "where standards have very often struggled to meet students' expectations". Only vetted and approved landlords will be allowed to sign up and offer accommodation within a rough estimated price range of between pounds 55 and pounds 120 a week.

City Residential has been operating since 2000 and has over 1000 properties under management.

The students' union will share its expertise in terms of the mod cons students expect and ensure students have piece of mind in terms of quality, their rights as tenants and dabbling in the property market - in many cases for the first time. …
