TRAINING and consultancy firm FGI has arrived in Hong Kong hoping to gain a foothold in the Far East - which will help the company continue to grow on a global scale.

This year alone, the Warwickbased business has provided training to 27 countries outside the UK. And this week, both company director Ian Ainsworth and head of new business James Pearson have embarked on a trade visit with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce in the hope of meeting potential new partners and trainers and also hosting a number of meetings with high profile networking organisations in Hong Kong.

"This is the first trade visit that FGI has done and supports all of the work we do internationally," said Mr Ainsworth.

"Most of our clients are blue chip, well-known organisations who have got worldwide presence.

"We train virtually in every country in Europe and right across the Middle East, down into Australasia.

"Thus far we haven't had partners in overseas countries but what we now have is a situation where we need more of a presence to be proactive in those marketplaces, to actually have our own trainers in those places, our own affiliate partners who can represent us and work as agents with key multi-national companies."

The company - which is based at the Innovation Centre at the Warwick Technology Park - started training in 2002 and during that time has grown from a very small organisation with one or two employees to a business which employs 40 staff and ranks highly as one of the leading IT training providers in the UK.

While in Hong Kong, the business is, in just a four-day period, attending 14 meetings - ranging from potential complementary partners, individual trainers, networking organisations and specific clients. "Recent activities that we have undertaken with regard to Singapore and Kuala Lumpar have identified that in selected locations throughout the Far East there is a real demand for high quality training delivered by local nationals to the UK," added Mr Ainsworth.

"The UK brand image is very high quality in many countries in the Far East and as such they are very attracted by the concept of a UK-based organisation actually doing business in Hong Kong.

"I have done business in the Far East myself but not in the IT training space so we are learning from some of my previous experiences in taking FGI to Hong Kong.

"In the context of our activities over here, the primary objective is to gain a footprint and Hong Kong is one of several parts of the world we are targeting.

"It is difficult to say what we want to achieve in the next few years. We would certainly like to have a presence here in Hong Kong and undertake training and consultancy work, but I am not sure if I would go as far as to say we will have an office out here, but to be able to do repetitive training in Hong Kong of a scheduled and bespoke nature would be good. …
