ONE YEAR OF GMA NEWS: GMA News TV turns one year old this month, having survived 365 days of round-the-clock coverage of the news through a variety of shows.

One of these shows, "Powerhouse" hosted by Mel Tiangco, has been so successful that its running time has been extended from 30 minutes to one hour.

New episodes of "Powerhouse" now show Mel tailing her subjects outside of their usually palatial homes. Program manager Nena Dumol says after showing the subject at his most natural environment, the show then follows him throughout the day.

At the risk of sometimes being impertinent, Mel asks the most surprising questions that often catch her subjects off-guard. Some of her most titillating questions had been thrown at Sen. Manny Villar ("I hope you don't take this to be rude, meron po kasing mga kwento-kwento noon. I'd like to hear it straight from you, sa inyong dalawa. Sabi kasi, kaya daw po kayo mayaman, eh sapagkat mayaman si Mrs. Villar?"); Gov. Chavit Singson ("Bakit ang yaman ninyo? Sa'n galing ang yaman ninyo?").

On "Powerhouse," Mel asked Sen. Kiko Pangilinan pointblank: "Wala kang anak sa labas? Definitely walang number 2?").

In an earlier episode, the loquacious TV host asked San Juan Mayor Guia Gomez: "In Philippine society, people would refer to women in your situation as the other woman. In Tagalog, tawag nila, kerida. How do you deal with that?"

And finally, to Sen. Loren Legarda, Mel had this to ask: "Puwede ba akong makipagtsismisan sa 'yo?").

Then, she goes on to drop a couple of names who are reportedly being linked to her, like those of Sen. Edgardo Angara and Pres. Ramos-Horta.
