Private Lawyers in Journalists' Slay

MANILA, Philippines - The creation of an independent team of investigators and lawyers from the private sector that would be given authority to prosecute the perpetrators in cases of slain journalists had been asked from President Benigno S. Aquino III Friday. Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone Friday called on the Aquino administration to create and independent team of investigators and prosecutors to solve the continued cases of killing of journalists following another death of an editor in Mindanao this week. "We are making this proposal as we condemn the latest killing of another journalist in Mindanao. We need to have a firm resolve to end this impunity," Evardone said. Evardone, chairman of House Committee on Public Information, said the independent team from the private sector should be empowered and cloth with vast authority to go after the perpetrators of crimes against journalists, saying these unresolved crimes have chilling effects on the exercise of press freedom of media people. He said there is a need for a private sector-led team of investigators and prosecution since current law enforcement and prosecution have failed to solve crimes against media practitioners. …
