DAVE MOUNTFORD and Sarah Livett were crowned North Wales five-mile champions after breaking the course records in Sunday's Abergele 5. The pair celebrated their call-ups to the senior Wales team for the Abbey Dash 10k in Leeds later this month by winning the men's and women's races respectively in the 26th running of the race - also setting Championship best times.

Liverpool Harrier Mountford, formerly of Deeside AC, set a new under-23 championship best with his time of 25 minutes 35 seconds. It was the 21-year-old's third win in a row in the Abergele race, which for several years has incorporated the North Wales championship.

Livett, 18, of Menai Track & Field, broke both the junior and senior women's championship bests with her time of 29.47 as she improved on her second place from last year. She will join Mountford in running for Wales in Leeds on Sunday, November 18.

Mountford produced a superb run, leading from start to finish. He was just over a minute ahead of Lee Jones, his former team-mate from Deeside, who finished second in 26.43. Eryri Harrier Brendan Rothery, a past runner-up in the race, was third in 27.00, while 35 seconds behind him was teenager Iolo Hughes of Menai Track & Field, whose impressive run earned him fourth place and the U17 title.

Dave Livett finished 17th overall, more than 40 seconds ahead of last year's women's winner, Wrexham AC athlete Emma Parry, who was second in 30.28 (22nd overall), while in third was U17 Georgia Garner (37th overall) of Colwyn Bay AC in 31.35.

There were several other notable results, including the winner of the very first Abergele 5, Arwel Lewis, claiming the M50 title, finishing 27th overall in 31.05.

Harvey Wharton of Cybi Striders won the M35 title in an age-group championship record of 28.07, while Chris Birch of host club Abergele Harriers won the F65 title in 36.41.

Menai ended Eryri's run of six consecutive team wins in this race, while Wrexham took the women's title from last year's winners Prestatyn.

The Abergele 5 was sponsored by Spillane & Co Wealth Management, as it has been for the last five years. Abergele Harriers would also like to thank the many other local businesses who support the race every year.
