Around the STA's

Article excerpt

SASTA's main areas of activity include the provision of professional development for Primary, Middle School and Senior Secondary science teachers and resources and activities for teachers and students. Whilst continuing to service its members and students, this year the Association evaluated a number of premises for sale with a view to re-locating from its current office accommodation at 214 Port Road, Hindmarsh, which it has been leasing from the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) since January 2008. Subsequently in June premises at 249 Henley Beach Road, Torrensville were purchased and are currently being renovated with an intention to move in by 30 September.

Holiday Revision Seminars

Another initiative this year was the introduction of revision seminars for year 12 science students during the school holidays. Unfortunately this activity had limited success with only biology being well patronized.

Professional Development

To date, this year's events have included the Psychology Summer Conference held on 18 January, one-day workshops for teachers new to teaching year 12 biology, physics, chemistry and psychology held on 16 March and the Annual Conference and Expo at Immanuel College on 12 and 13 April.

Forthcoming activities include a Maths & Science Middle School Conference, which is being organised by the Mathematical Association of SA and the South Australian Science Teachers Association and will be held on 30 November at UniSA (Mawson Lakes Campus).

Resources

Resource sales for next year will commence shortly with Year 12 biology and chemistry practical manuals and teaching notes becoming available. SASTA's popular biology, chemistry, geology, nutrition, physics and psychology study guides updated for 2013 should be available around the middle of March next year.

Exam Preparation Seminars

As a service to students who purchase the SASTA Study Guides and other interested students, each year SASTA holds Year 12 Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Nutrition and Physics exam preparation seminars. These 2-hour seminars, which were held on consecutive Saturday afternoons in August, attracted several hundred participants.

Oliphant Science Awards

Proudly sponsored by the The Advertiser and the Department of Education and Child Development the 32nd Oliphant Science Awards competition was held this year. Over 80 schools and nearly 2,000 students participated in this year's competition, which included an Open Day and Presentation Ceremony in the Banquet Hall at The Adelaide Festival Centre. Cash prizes were awarded to category and sponsor prize-winners.

Newsletters and Journals

SASTA has been producing seven newsletters and two journals each year for its 480 members who also receive four editions of Teaching Science. This year a third edition of the SASTA Journal was introduced due to the efforts of its editor John Glistak and an e-Newsletter is distributed regularly to members and non-members who are interested in SASTA's various events and activities. …
