Happy Celts Notch First Win of Season

THE Celts Wheelchair Basketball Club's Division One team notched up their first victory for the first time in their 2012-13 season with a 50-35 triumph at home against the Rhinos.

The Celts' first team have had a difficult start to their 2012-13 season, loosing to the Jaguars, Coyotes and Steelers before putting a really good performance together in a tough match against the Cobras last month, which led to the Celts narrowest loss of the season so far (39-49).

The Celts lost three strong players over the summer but the results to date showed that the newly-formed unit were starting to grow and gel together.

The Celts were ready for the Rhinos and were playing at their new home court, Cardiff University Sports Village, in front of loyal supporters.

The Celts won the tip and took advantage of lead almost immediately with two quick baskets from Caroline Matthews in the Rhinos' paint. The Rhinos' J Dunn then began to show the Celts what he is capable of and gave the travelling team its five points of the first period.

However, he couldn't match the all-round scoring ability of the Celts and with baskets dropping for the home team's Matthews, Liam Holt and Tom Seabourne, the Celts went into the first break leading 14-5.

The second period saw the Rhinos dig into the game and Dunn continued to give the Celts problems.

The Celts were passing the ball well and, at times, had too many options at the offensive end which led to confusion and missed opportunities, but they managed to maintain a steady scoring rate throughout and further baskets fell for the Celts ' Matthews, Holt and Seabourne. …
