ANORTH Wales coach and two clubs from the region are among the winners who will receive recognition at tomorrow's Welsh Athletics Awards dinner in Cardiff.

The annual event rewards Welsh athletes for their achievements during the season, and includes the athlete of the year award and the induction of a great name from the sport into the governing body's Hall of Fame.

The identities of the winners of those two awards will be kept secret until tomorrow night.

However, also among the winners are Wrexham Amateur Athletic Club, Menai Track and Field and throwing coach John Parkin, who has worked with field eventers from both Colwyn Bay and Deeside athletic clubs among others. Beverley Parkin will be presented with the "participation coach" award in the Coach of the Year category.

He coaches Shotton thrower Bev Jones, who won her first Paralympic Games medal with bronze in the discus in London this summer, and has played a key role in the development of Birchfield Harrier Adele Nicoll, one of Wales' brightest up and coming throwers, as well as coaching national shot champion, Colwyn Bay's Nathan Thomason.

After initially getting involved in the sport through his son, he has increased his involvement and developed as a coach, specialising in the heavy throws events and producing many regional champions, national medallists and schools international athletes.

Jones Parkin has given valuable time over 18 years of coaching to develop young athletes, travelling long distances each week to commit to coaching at both Deeside and Colwyn Bay four times a week.

Wrexham AC, meanwhile, has won the Inclusivity Club of The Year Award.

The club has used funding to increase its membership and also to integrate Wrexham Special Olympics, a club for athletes with intellectual disabilities which has produced the likes of the aforementioned Jones and Richard Turner, who recently helped Great Britain to gold in the 4x100m relay at an invitational meeting in Russia and claimed two individual bronzes at the same meeting. …
