The Association of the British Pharmaceutical (ABPI) held its Annual Conference in London on April 25, with a session dedicated to discussing health research across the UK. The ABPI represents innovative research-based biopharmaceutical companies, large, medium and small, leading an exciting new era of biosciences in the UK.

At the Conference, Wales launched an exciting, new initiative called Health Research Wales. Professor Jonathan Bisson, Clinical Director, National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR) Academic Health Science Collaboration (AHSC), unveiled Health Research Wales at its first UK event.

Participating in a debate on 'Innovation for Health and Wealth - do devolved nations have the edge?', Professor Bisson said: "In Wales, we want to achieve better health for everyone, improve the patient experience and deliver a quality and safe service that will improve health outcomes. We know that working together with the life science sector is pivotal to achieving these goals."

Health Research Wales has been established to provide a one-stop source of information and support for companies wishing to undertake clinical research in Wales. It provides a comprehensive service which supports the set up and management of clinical studies in the NHS.

A dedicated industry team has been put in place to ensure the delivery of a high quality and professional Health Research Wales service, with managers working across Wales to support delivery. Working closely with the NHS Research and Development (R&D) teams, the industry managers are able to provide advice and support the establishment and management of innovative studies.

Health Research Wales supports the NISCHR Welsh Government's 'Industry Engagement in Wales' policy. …
