Cotabato City (PNA) - More and more farmers are venturing into organic rice farming as the Department of Agriculture (DA-12) intensifies its advocacy on that method of farming.

The advocacy includes the publication of success stories on organic rice being exported to Hong Kong and Dubai, according to DA-12 Executive Director Amalia Jayag-Datukan in a statement.

Datukan announced that DA-12 has allocated R21.7 million to expand organic farming activities in Region 12 as part of the agency's efforts to help ensure food sufficiency in the country.

Last week, DA-12 in partnership with the Don Bosco Multi-purpose Cooperative (MPC), sent 3.3 metric tons of organic rice to Hong Kong, the second tranche for exporting such product to the former Crown Colony.

Farmers are continuously urged to go into organic farming in North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat, two known rice producing provinces in Region 12.

Other provinces in the region are South Cotabato, Saranggani and the cities of Tacurong, Cotabato, Koronadal, Kidapawan and General Santos.

Datukan said the additional budget for organic farming will help ensure food security. …
