Clear Regulations Key to LPG Industry Growth

The Department of Energy (DOE) says proper regulation of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) industry will help propel its growth as one of the alternative sources of energy in the country. DOE Director Zanaida Monsada said this during the opening of the Asian LP Gas Summit on Tuesday at the historic landmark Manila Hotel where industry experts convened to highlight key safety and sustainability issues in the utilization of LPG in emerging countries such as the Philippines. We still have a lot of prospects for LPG growth but we need to have clearer regulations, Monsada said adding that we have regulations but we encounter road blocks along the way. She was referring to the LPG Code that has failed to become a bill until now. According to her, once passed into a law, the LPG Code will allow them to efficiently regulate the industry and get rid of scrupulous players in the market, providing more room for demand and supply of LPGs in the country. In 2013, only 11 percent of the total oil demand in the country came from the LPG. Production of LPG was only at 6.5 percent. The auto LPG sector is also bound to benefit from the law. Meanwhile, the energy department has issued the LPG Industry Rule through Circular 2014-01-001 early this year, with the aim of regulating the LPG players through the standards compliance certificate. …
