Mediocrity's Reward?

Article excerpt

As the time for governance of the present administration and its allies draws to a close, our country is being cajoled with many trial balloons about constitutional amendments. One set of proposals is about allowing foreign capital to invest in economic activities that are reserved only for Filipinos or Philippine corporations 60 percent of whose capital stock is controlled by citizens of our republic. Other groups talk about term extension of the President, because of his good if not excellent track record. The proposals vary from day to day. Sometimes we are told that the House of Representatives leadership is committed only to one simple amendment and that is only by adding the word or phrase as the Congress may determine or similar words to said economic provision. Today as this article is being written, the front page story is that the LP (Liberal Party) will meet to clarify if Pnoy is not keen on second term. The LP will hold a special meeting at its Balay headquarters to tackle Charter change (cha cha) initiatives. I recall that last week, Malacanang said that President Aquino will listen to the voice of his bosses (people). To clarify matters I ask the following questions: Who will speak for the peoplethe Liberal Party? Will the bosses' orders be determined by the Social Weather Stations? Pulse Asia? Will the Department of Social Welfare and Development be used? How about the Barangay Captains? The Mayors League, etc? What guarantee do the bosses have that only the economic provisions will be amended?.. That only the term of the President will be changed? How about the term of the members of Congress?...The local government officials?... The power of the Supreme Court, will it be curtailed? How about that of the President, will it be expanded? How about the definition of savings, etc? …
