Solihull Sixth Form College: Service Points Students in Right Direction

Careers support for students is taken very seriously at Solihull Sixth Form College.

There has been a dedicated college-based service for many years staffed by the college's own senior careers adviser and support staff with further help from the local central careers services.

Students have year-round access to a well-equipped careers resource area, college-wide specialist IT provision and an extensive programme of events and services to help with mapping out the next step.

The also have direct access to personal advice and guidance when they require it.

The high spot of the careers calendar is the staging of one of the largest independent higher education and careers fairs in the country at the end of the summer term.

Representatives attend from more that 100 universities, colleges, major employers and professional bodies.

Talks are given on nearly 50 subjects and career topics, making it as comprehensive as possible for an event of this kind.

Students are prompted to start their planning early.

Mr Jim Clulee, the college's senior careers adviser, said: "Entry to both higher education and careers is now very competitive, and the best opportunities go to the best prepared. …
