A BAD HABIT; Nuns in Jeans Advert Upsets Local Convents

ADVERTISEMENTS which show nuns wearing jeans under their habits have been labelled as cynical and distasteful by Birmingham convents.

The hoardings, put up in the city centre, show four attractive young nuns wearing cloaks and Diesel jeans above the caption Superior Denim.

Mother Superior Sister Christine Hoverd, head of the 150-year-old St John the Divine convent in Moat House Road, Ward End, said: "We see the adverts when we go into the city and we are unimpressed. They are distasteful and inappropriate.

"Habits date back to fourth century Rome when Christian women felt it was important to wear simple clothes rather than finery. They are a symbol of a vocation."

Sister Hoverd said the 15 nuns at the community, aged between 31 and 90, wore what they personally felt was appropriate.

"There are times when it would not be appropriate to wear jeans or slacks, but when sisters are gardening or working in the kitchen, they may do so," she said. …
