Two from Kane County to Display in Geneva

Jerry Lang and Suzanne Poursine Massion, two Kane County residents who have spent much of their lives creating works of art, will be among the featured artists on the Art Around the Fox event this weekend.

Art Around the Fox will feature about 80 artists in locations from northern Kane County to southwestern DuPage County on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Lang, owner of the Hand, Heart and Mind gallery, 227 W. State St. in Geneva, and Hampshire Township resident Poursine Massion will both feature their works throughout the weekend in Geneva.

Lang first opened his Geneva art gallery in 1989, as a studio to showcase his own drawings and ceramic, metalwork and jewelry designs. He said the idea for the studio name came from way he believes that art is created.

"You start off by using the hand to bring it into this world," Lang said. "The inspiration comes in through the heart, and you need intellect to make sense out of it so that you can make it accessible to other people."

Making art accessible is something that Lang knows a lot about.

As a member of the Fox Valley Art Council, he was the brainchild of the first Art Around the Fox spring art tour. He also coordinates a myriad of classes and workshops out of his downtown studio on everything from drum-making and dream art to clay sculpture.

At the time that he graduated from high school, Lang was living in Chesapeake, Va., a long way from the Fox Valley area, but close to where he would get his start in the field.

"Before I even went on to school I knew that art was what I was supposed to be doing with my life," Lang said. "It was something that I felt very passionate about."

True to that inner calling, Lang turned down a college scholarship in music to pursue an undergraduate degree in fine and applied art at Hampton University, which was only 30 minutes away. Later, he completed a master's of fine art degree at Michigan State University.

"There I decided to be primarily a three-dimensional artist, with clay the medium that I would focus on the most," Lang said.

He opened his gallery in Geneva in 1989 with his former wife, who was born in the area. Since then, his work has expanded to focus heavily on custom jewelry design.

"I do a lot of design for wedding band sets," Lang said.

However, for this year's Art Around the Fox, Lang says he is trying something new. For the first time, his own original designs will be on display with the work of his students and others who teach classes out of his gallery. …
