News of the year

- Maine West High School became the first school in Maine Township High School District 207 to pilot the COACH(Cooperative Achievement) program where 50 students signed up to be paid tutors for their peers struggling with different academic subjects.

- Maine West becomes the last high school in the Northwest suburbs to have a police officer stationed in its building. Des Plaines Police Officer Scott Moreth became the first police officer permanently stationed at the school in its 41-year history.

Athletic high points

- The Maine West boys baseball team won the Central Suburban League Conference.

- The girls basketball team posted a 21-10 regular season record and won the Central Suburban North conference. Team also won the Glenbrook South regional.

- Girls freshman track team won the Central Suburban League conference this year.

Non-athletic high points

- Auto shop teacher Gregory Serrano returned to the school from a sabbatical leave where he worked with racer Craig Breedlove attempting to make the Spirit of America jet car travel 800 mph break the world land speed record in the Nevada desert. He later brought the legendary driver to talk with the students and is helping to develop a science Web site related to the jet car. Students are also involved in the Web site's development.

- Maine West continued its pursuit of academic excellence by adding an Advanced Placement environmental science course and accelerated U.S. history course to its curriculum this year.

Athletic milestones

- Basketball coach Derril Kipp became only the third coach in state girls basketball history to win 500 games. The record-setting victory came in a 48-39 win over visiting Resurrection High School Feb. 14.

- Boxer Francisco Tafoya, 17, a junior, won Chicago's Golden Gloves tournament and qualified to box in the National Golden Gloves Tournament in Detroit. …
