A GIFTED Bedworth woman with a flair for languages has said goodbye to friends and family and set out for a rural province of China.

Mandy Bidgood has signed up to the Voluntary Services Overseas and on Wednesday she jetted out to Beijing to begin a two-year stay in the south west of the country.

The 27-year-old from Renison Road will be staying at a teaching college in the Guizhou province helping students learn English - even though she left Bedworth unable to speak a word of Chinese.

She said: "I took a Teaching English as a Foreign Language course, and will be teaching students aged between 18 and 22.

"They will have learnt some English but I'll be working more on their grammar, and their reading and writing skills.

"Basically, you try to use a communication method, working with groups and in pairs."

Mandy, a former Ash Green School pupil, took a degree in French and Japanese at Cardiff University, graduating in 1995.

Because of the demands of her course, she is a seasoned traveller, although leaving the country for two years is a tough prospect. …
