W.G. Jackson Research Ship to Dock at Waukegan Harbor

Lake County residents can do a little research about water - out on the water - Sunday through Wednesday on the W.G. Jackson Research Ship at Waukegan Harbor.

The vessel, from Grand Valley State University in Muskegon, Mich., will take participants on educational cruises on Lake Michigan.

An open house on the ship will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, and two-hour educational cruises for school groups, community leaders, scouting troops and others will occur at various times Monday through Wednesday.

While the boat rides the waves of Lake Michigan, science instructors and laboratory assistants from Grand Valley State will guide passengers through hands-on scientific experiments in the onboard laboratory.

Some issues discussed include water temperature, sediment on the lake's bottom, plankton, shoreline erosion and other environmental issues, said Susie Schrieber, chairwoman of the Waukegan Harbor Citizens Advisory Group that is sponsoring the boat's Lake County visit. …
