IRG Discusses Advanced Code System for Computerization of Chinese Characters

A five-day international conference to promote a unicode system for computerized Chinese characters started in Seoul yesterday under the auspices of. the Agency for Technology and Standard, an affiliate of the Commerce- Industry-Energy Ministry Ministry.

The conference is now underway at the Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel in Seoul with the representatives of the eight member countries of the Ideographic Rapporteur Group (IRG) attending.

IRG, a division of the International Standardization, has been facilitating discussions on standardized numeric entities for Chinese characters to promote the global system encoding and deciphering of Chinese characters in the computer system.

The joint study to develop the international standard for electronic Chinese characters has been in demand among online users who have difficulties in reading Chinese letters due to the differing code systems from country to country.

For instance, in order for Korean computer users to read Chinese letters on foreign home pages, their computers must be equipped with a viewer software, while western countries have a shared code system of Roman alphabets allowing users to download and read documents, without an extra tool regardless of its origin. …
