School in Art College Plan; Classes in the Performing Arts

STAGE struck youngsters were today given a major boost with a pounds 500,000 plan to turn a Tamworth high school into a college where they will learn to sing, dance and act.

The new role for Wilnecote High School was announced by the Department for Education and Employment and head teacher Phil Prettyman said: 'This is a very exciting development for the school.'

Government funding of pounds 500,000 was pledged over the next four years and the school has raised a further pounds 50,000 in sponsorship with backing from communications firm NTL.

Facilities at the campus in Tinkers Green Road, Wilnecote, will also be available to the public outside of school hours.

Granting of college status will not affect the school's current role and the full curriculum will continue to be taught.

The plan is to turn the existing school hall into 'an enhanced performance area' and recording and dance studios will be added.

A Staffordshire County Council spokesman: 'Staff at the school made a successful bid for arts college status. …
