Austria-Bound Choir's Testing the Food

About 40 members of the Barrington Children's Choir still have roughly three months to become acclimated to Austrian food.

The group's chamber choir members, who are between 13 and 18 years old, will perform at the American Celebration of Music in Austria from June 12 to 25.

In the meantime, they're trying to sample some Austrian dishes by eating at such restaurants as Fritzl's European Restaurant & Pub in Lake Zurich, where they visited last month.

"I think the kids mostly picked at it," said Cindy Smith, the group's publicity chairman. "It's a little different, and they're going to have to get used to it. It's very new to them."

The children liked some of the food, such as the spaetzel. But some of the more heavy Austrian dishes, such as Rouladen of Beef, will take some time, said Fritzl's owner Peter Tschurtz.

"It's a little foreign to them," he said.

The children also are scheduled to participate in a series of meetings and events to learn about the country's culture and customs before they depart.

Their tour will conclude with a stop in Budapest, Hungary.
