Jane Addams Wins District 15 Awards

It was a red-letter day Wednesday for Jane Addams School. The Palatine school was recognized for having both the employee of the month and the volunteer of the month.

The school also was selected as a Reading Best Practice Learning and Leadership School for its research-based reading practices.

Chicago Bear Jim Flanigan who founded the James Flanigan Literacy Foundation, will present the award to Jane Addams representatives during the eighth-annual Business-Education Partnership Conference luncheon Wednesday.

Jane Addams will receive the award on behalf of the district and the group of Learning and Leadership Schools.

Meanwhile, program assistant Mary Jane Donohue won the Employee of the Month Award for her work with first-grade students at the school.

Diane Abram was named the district's Volunteer of the Month after serving as the Jane Addams Kindergym coordinator for four years. Abram, a former gym teacher, updated the curriculum. Her changes now will be adopted by the other schools.

Save energy, make money: Palatine Township Elementary District 15 picked up a check for $43,680 from ComEd for conserving energy during peak usage periods last summer.

"This is a rarity," Superintendent John G. Conyers said, holding up an oversize check. "This is a check from ComEd."

To help the district conserve energy, the administrative staff adopts a four-day, 40-hour work week in the summer.

Neighboring Barrington Unit District 220 also received a check from the electric company for $28,436 for reducing its use of power.
