Geneva Working to Clinch Deal with Grocer at Family Foods Site

No handshake deals have been struck, but property owners appear close to selling the vacant Family Foods building on Geneva's east side.

Real estate agent Dan Dolan said two small- to midsize grocery store companies are interested in buying the property, which includes a liquor store and covers about 3.5 acres at East Street Drive and East State Street.

"We have two prospects right now," Dolan said. "I am just anxious for one of them to come to an agreement."

Dolan would not reveal the name of either business. He said he hopes a deal is reached in 30 to 60 days but offered no guarantees. The potential buyers are conducting economic surveys to see if a grocery store would thrive at the site, he said.

East siders have been without a grocery store since Family Foods closed its doors in August after 27 years of business.

The idle activity on the property prompted 3rd Ward Alderman Ray Pawlak to organize a city task force. The group is studying ways to attract another grocery store and other retail to the east side.

Economic Development Director Chris Aiston said he hopes the city can offer an interested buyer a package of incentives by the time the East Side Redevelopment Task Force meets again Feb. …
