Bergman Healing after Suicide Attempt

Lots of people - including state legislators - expressed sadness when they learned State Rep. Robert Bergman was rushed to the hospital after an apparent suicide attempt last week.

But the good news is that his condition is improving.

Bergman, 50, of Palatine, was listed in fair condition earlier this week at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, a nursing supervisor said.

But there's been no word on when he'll be released from the hospital.

Bergman apparently shot himself in the chest Dec. 15, piercing his left lung, authorities said. He was found bleeding after two people who were also at the Deer Grove Forest Preserve near Palatine heard gunshots and rushed to his side.

A note was found on the front seat of his car, Cook County Forest Preserve Police said. The contents of the note were not revealed by authorities.

Payne moves on ... In a surprise move, village officials announced longtime Palatine Fire Chief Richard D. Payne is leaving his post.

Although Payne couldn't be reached to discuss the reason for his unexpected departure, Village Manager Michael J. Cassady said it was "with regret" that he accepted Payne's letter of intent to retire.

Cassady praised Payne for helping to provide leadership to "a top-notch fire department. …
