Downers Grove South Sweats out Zatloukal, Burns Warriors

The perspiration streaming down Downers Grove South coach Paul Runyon's face Friday exemplified the tension of a hotly-contested post-season contest in Waubonsie Valley's steamy gym.

The Mustangs spent most of the night building a 12-point lead, then survived Dan Zatloukal's fourth-quarter scoring spree to post a mild 58-56 upset over the No. 3 seeded Warriors in a regional championship game of the IHSA Class AA Oswego Sectional.

Mike Smith and Keith McCormick paced a balanced scoring attack with 12 points each, while Jason Hogrefe added 10 as the sixth-seeded Mustangs (18-9) advanced to Tuesday night's sectional semifinal against Brother Rice.

Zatloukal poured in 24 second-half points for Waubonsie Valley (19-8), including four 3-pointers, as part of a game-high 29-point effort.

"Number 12 kept them in the game with his 3s, but I thought shutting down their inside game in the second half was big," said a nearly-dehydrated Runyon, who needed to lean against the scorer's table to deliver his post-game comments.

"They hit every open shot they had," said Warriors coach Dave Saurbaugh, after the Mustangs drained 12 of 18 shots from the field in the second half. "We made a lot of turnovers on the perimeter that cost us, and it got to the point where we couldn't quite get back."

Runyon praised his bench, which extended the 5-point lead it inherited to 6 during a long third-quarter stint. Steve Szymanski contributed 7 points off the bench while Gordon Szymanski added four. …
