Sunday's Bike Ride to Benefit Diabetes Association

Ron and Janice Wodka bought a small trampoline for the house to encourage their 2 1/2-year-old daughter to exercise regularly.

Admittedly, it's hard to get toddlers to do much of anything organized, or for more than two minutes at a time. But the Wodkas say it is important for Kristin, a diabetic, to get in the habit now.

"Daily exercise keeps the insulin working efficiently," Ron Wodka said.

On Sunday, it is Janice and Ron who will be getting the exercise, along with more than 200 others interested in raising money for the American Diabetes Association.

This year for the first time, the Northern Illinois ADA is sponsoring the Tour de Cure, a 50-kilometer ride through the Blackwell Forest Preserve along the Illinois Prairie Path in DuPage County. A 10-kilometer ride is available as well.

In the past, communities in the Chicago area sponsored their own, smaller bike ride fund-raisers.

The large-scale event is expected to generate about $40,000 to be used for diabetes education, programs and research in the Chicago area, an ADA spokesperson said. …
