Benefit Fitness Competition Is Taking Shape

Police and fire employees throughout Lake County will be swimming, running and biking through the 12th annual Public Safety Fitness Competition this weekend at the Centre Club in Libertyville.

The competition is designed to promote physical fitness and raise money for a scholarship fund established in the memory of Condell Medical Center emergency department physician Jac Bellis. It is sponsored by Condell, in conjunction with MEDTRANS ambulance company of Libertyville and Centre Club.

The event, being held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14, includes teams competing in a mini triathlon with a four-lap swim, a one-mile run and a two-mile bike ride. There are also special events for individuals such as a bench press competition, a 50-yard dash and a heavyweight relay for individuals weighing 200 pounds or more working in teams of four.

Awards will be presented to the top three teams and to the best individual performance for a male and female in specific age groups and class.

Those signed up to participate this year include the Lake County Sheriff's police, Waukegan police and fire departments, Libertyville fire department, Mundelein fire department, Wauconda fire department, Gurnee police and fire departments, Grayslake fire department and Glencoe public safety. …
