Army Capt. Robert J. Walthouse, son of Tomas C. and Frances Walthouse of Rolling Meadows, has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal.

The medal is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguish themselves by outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement or service to the United States.

Walthouse is an assistant division aviation officer assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Aviation Brigade at Wheeler Army Airfield, Oahu, Hawaii.

The captain is a 1991 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Navy Cmdr. Michael H. Bernard, a 1978 graduate of Forest View High School in Arlington Height recently retired from active duty after 23 years of service.

Bernard most recently served with Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Mark D. Granger, a 1994 graduate of Christian Liberty Academy, Arlington Heights, recently graduated from the Combat Engineer Officer Course. During the course - conducted at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N. C. -students receive instruction in basic and supervisory level operational and planning skills in engineering related subjects pertaining to mobility, countermobility, survivability, and general engineering.

Upon completion of the course, students are qualified to perform tasks appropriate for a platoon commander.
