Sixth-Grade Vikings Defeat Christ the King

Vikings 28, Christ the King 8: St. Peter Vikings sixth-grade boys grabbed the lead early and never relinquished it when they met Christ the King on Feb 23. Holding their opponents to only 4 points per half, the Vikings walked away with a 24-8 victory.

Ben Stell led the Viking charge with 6 baskets, 2 free throws and 11 rebounds. Mike Laughlin added another 4 baskets, while Kurt Herrmann sank 2 free throws.

Defensively the Vikings did their best to keep the ball away from Christ the King. Joe Kryger tipped away a pass by the opponents. Steals were a key part of St. Peter's game with 5 by Herrmann, 5 by Stell, and 1 each by Mike Aument and Laughlin. Brendan Tresch added to the Vikings efforts with rebounding and aggressive play.

Vikings 20, St. Mary 18: In a tight game that saw the lead teeter back and forth, St. Peter Vikings sixth-grade boys squeaked out a victory in the Feb 24 game against St. Mary. Ben Stell's basket, with ten seconds to go, sealed the Vikings' 20-18 win.

Stell led the Vikings' scoring with 16 points. Kurt Herrmann added 2 baskets for the Vikings. Mike Aument got an assist.

Defensively the Vikings limited St. Mary's scoring options with steals by Joe Kryger (1), Chris Miller (1), Herrmann (2) and Stell (3), and blocks by Mike Laughlin and Herrmann. Brendan Tresch contributed to the team effort with aggressive play and 2 rebounds.

Queen of Rosary 30, Vikings 15: St. Peter Viking sixth-grade boys struggled against the Queen of the Rosary Cougars in an intense, hard-fought Mar. 3 contest. After a low scoring first quarter, the Cougars started pulling away, ending up with a 30-15 victory.

Both teams played tight defense in the first quarter. A rebound by Joe Kryger led to the Vikings' lone basket of the quarter, sunk by Ben Stell. Queen of the Rosary scored only 2 baskets in that opening quarter.

The Cougars stepped up their scoring the remainder of the game, despite a strong defensive effort by the Vikings that included steals by Stell (5), Kurt Herrmann (2) and Mike Laughlin (2).

After struggling against the Cougar defense for three quarters, the Vikings hit their stride in the fourth quarter, when they outscored Queen of the Rosary, but the gap was too big and the effort too late.
