Formal Ceremony Announces Miami-Based Art Basel Event

MIAMI--A formal announcement and reception took place at the Miami Beach Convention Center in December to officially announce that one of the world's leading fair for modern contemporary art fairs is launching a new art event in the United States. Art Basel, based in Basel, Switzerland, has signed a long-term agreement with the Miami Beach Convention Center. The event will be called Art Basel Miami Beach and will debut Dec. 12 through 16.

Among the speakers at the event were Miami Beach Mayor Neilsen Kasdin who stated, "Art Basel is the premier art fair in the world. Art Basel Miami Beach will become one of the most important cultural events on this continent and confirms that Miami Beach is one of the most important cultural destinations in the world today."

Norman Braman, one of the foremost art collectors in the United States and chairman of the newly formed Art Basel Miami Beach Host Committee said, "The premier art fair in the world has chosen Miami Beach as its American venue. This vote of confidence in our community should give South Floridians who care about art and culture, a reason to feel proud."

Approximately 150 leading galleries from North America, Latin America and Europe will be selected as exhibitors. Art Basel Miami Beach will be collaborating closely with art museums and private art collections in South Florida. Crossover cultural events with music, fashion, film, design and architecture will also be offered as a complementary program. Also, in the plans are the use of various indoor and outdoor spaces nearby for events and exhibitions including Miami Beach's unique Art Deco district. Ship's containers will also be set up at venues throughout the City as project rooms for young artists. …
